Every summer I do a mix of newish pop songs from the indie universe that go well with the long days’ fun and freedom.

Here’s this year’s edition:

1. The Radio Dept. - Heaven’s on Fire
2. Wild Nothing - Summer Holiday
3. Avi Buffalo - What’s It In For?
4. The New Pornographers - If You Can’t See My Mirrors
5. The Fresh & Onlys - Dreaming Is Easy
6. Let’s Wrestle - Diana’s Hair
7. The Morning Benders - Excuses
8. Dinosaur Feathers - Fantasy Memorial
9. Neon Indian - Deadbeat Summer
10. Beach Fossils - Daydream
11. Harlem - Gay Human Bones
12. Beach House - Walk In The Park
13. Surfer Blood - Swim
14. Twin Sister - Lady Daydream
15. Veronica Falls - Starry Eyes

Download the zipped folder here. Make a playlist in iTunes and drag it in. The important point wasn’t that Exxon couldn’t clean up its oil spill. The point was, no one could clean it up.

By telling the story of the company’s incompetence, we had perpetuated the myth that real cleanup of a major oil spill is possible. We had left the industry free to say that next time, with proper preparation and equipment, they would be able to recover any spilled oil.

The truth is that when large amounts of oil go into the ocean, it’s a huge success to recover as much as 10 percent. More than that is rarely possible. Oil spreads too rapidly and reacts too quickly with the environment; and the ocean is a challenging place to work, especially considering the logistics of speedily gathering up a blob the size of a small state.
”

-
From A Spill’s Dirty Secret on SEED Magazine (via uzairm) (via abagond)

The broadcast alone last night, it started with one of the NBA reporters outside the arena covering a civil rights march that was taking place outside the arena. And then the in-studio hosts, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, Chris Weber, all former players, took turns taking shots a Governor Jan Brewer and the law. And Chris Weber, former player, even cited “By the Time I Get to Arizona” and John McCain and his former support for boycotting the holiday of Dr. Martin Luther King. So it’s politicized this entire arena. And what the Suns did yesterday, is entirely without precedent.”- David Ziran, author of A People’s History of Sports

He spent 10 days in jail and was subsequently deported. The lyrics may point to his suspicion that the pilot was part of the sting.
